The Power of Personalized Recognition: How Understanding Your Team Can Drive Performance

My love language is Words of Affirmation. Praise and recognition motivate me and make me feel appreciated. A simple acknowledgment of my efforts can fuel my drive and keep me engaged.


But here’s the thing—what works for me might not work for everyone. As leaders, do we truly understand how each of our employees prefers to receive praise and recognition? Do we know what genuinely motivates them?


The Importance of Understanding Your Team


Taking the time to understand your team on a personal level is one of the most impactful things you can do as a leader. Knowing what drives them, what keeps them going on tough days, and how they like to be recognized can transform your leadership approach.

When I start at a new company or welcome a new team member, one of the first things I do is interview them. I want to understand what makes them tick. I ask questions like:


  • How do you like to receive praise? Privately or publicly?

  • What motivates you to do your best work?

  • What keeps you going on tough days?

  • How can I make you feel seen and appreciated?


These conversations aren’t just about boosting morale; they’re about unlocking potential. When employees feel understood and valued in the way that resonates most with them, they perform at their best.


Small Actions, Big Impact


For some, motivation comes from a heartfelt message—a quick Slack note, an email, or a verbal acknowledgment. For others, it might be public recognition, a tangible reward, or new growth opportunities.


As leaders, it's easy to get caught up in strategic goals and daily fires. But recognizing our people in a way that matters to them is one of the simplest yet most powerful things we can do to keep them engaged and inspired.


A Personal Example


My current leader, Dave Blake, understands this about me. He makes a point to speak words of praise when it's earned, and on tough days, his encouragement make all the difference.


That small gesture didn't just make me feel valued—it made me a better employee.


So if you haven’t had a conversation like this with your direct reports, I highly encourage it. It could be the key to unlocking their best work and building a team that feels genuinely seen and appreciated.
