Your Past Doesn't Dictate Your Future

I used to believe success came from privilege.
I was wrong.
For most of my life, I let my upbringing, my education, my wealth, or lack of it, and even my family define me.
I grew up on Long Island.
My parents owned a deli and worked 7 days a week.
Neither of them went to college.
We didn’t have a lot, just enough to have some of the things we wanted.
I wasn’t exposed to corporate life or white-collar careers.
I went to a local university.
No MBA. No Master’s. Just a bachelor’s and a relentless work ethic.
I didn’t get my first passport until I was 33.
And to this day, I still live on Long Island.
I spent years trying to fit into rooms where I never felt like I belonged.
You think that feeling stops after school, it doesn’t.
I remember joining my first tech startup and feeling wildly out of place.
Surrounded by Ivy League grads, well-traveled professionals, and polished speakers.
People with stories I couldn’t relate to.
It wasn’t just imposter syndrome, it was shame.
It was this deep embarrassment that felt all too familiar.
That voice saying: “These are not your people.”
But here’s the truth I came to learn:
Belonging isn’t about where you came from. It’s about who you decide to be.
You don’t need the fanciest degree or an elite background.
You need belief. You need courage.
And you need to stop apologizing for your path.
Because the moment I owned my story,
I realized, these are exactly my people.
If you’ve ever felt like an outsider in the rooms you fought to get into,
I see you.
You belong. Right where you are.
Over the years I've met so many people just like me.
Those who had their own experiences and struggles, and yet despite everything managed to find and define their own success.
Your background doesn’t define your future, your belief does.
Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong? What helped you rewrite that story?
