Why Most Companies Aren't Ready for AI—and What to Do About It

Writer's picture: Kristi FaltorussoKristi Faltorusso

When it comes to AI, most companies aren’t as ready as they think. The problem isn’t the technology; it’s something far more fundamental: data.

Every time I speak to a room full of business leaders, I ask a simple question: “How many of you trust the data you have access to?”

The response? Awkward silence, a few sideways glances, and maybe—just maybe—a hand or two raised. And honestly, I’m never sure if those hands are driven by confidence or sheer oblivion.

Here’s the truth: AI outputs are only as good as the data they’re built on. If your data is messy, outdated, or inaccurate, your AI initiatives are doomed from the start. And yet, when I ask leaders about their priorities for the year, I rarely hear anything about Data Hygiene.

But if you’ve got AI on your 2025 strategy roadmap, you’d better pencil in Data Clean-Up right alongside it. Why? Because bad data leads to bad AI. And bad AI? That’s a disaster you can’t afford.

Why Prioritize Data?

Clean, accurate data isn’t just nice to have—it’s critical for:

  • Accuracy: AI models that actually work (imagine that!).

  • Reduced Bias: Let’s avoid reinforcing outdated societal stereotypes.

  • Efficiency: Cleaner data means faster training and quicker results.

  • Smarter Decisions: Because mistakes—especially costly ones—are not on anyone’s wish list.

Ready to Tackle Data Hygiene? Start Here:

  1. Get AI-Ready Clean, accurate, and well-structured data is non-negotiable. If you don’t have a solid data governance plan, now’s the time to create one.

  2. Unify Your Data Silos are the enemy. Centralize your data so it’s accessible and consistent across your organization.

  3. Leverage Metadata Metadata might not be the most glamorous part of your data strategy, but it’s crucial for deriving meaningful insights and training effective AI models.

  4. Align Data with Goals AI should solve real business problems. Make sure your data strategy is structured to support your key objectives.

  5. Upskill Your Team Data literacy isn’t optional anymore. Invest in training to ensure your team understands how to manage and utilize data effectively.

Make Data an Organizational Priority

This isn’t just an IT project. Data hygiene needs to be an organizational initiative supported at every level—from the C-suite to individual contributors. If your CEO is raving about AI, seize the opportunity to advocate for the groundwork that makes AI possible.

The Hard Truth

Here’s the bottom line: If your data is a mess, AI isn’t going to save you. It’s going to expose you.

So, how’s your data looking? Are you ready for AI—or are you setting yourself up for failure? Let’s get to work.
